Active Shooter Training

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will:
  • Understand the nature and characteristics of AAO incidents.
  • Apply the Escape-Hide-Tell methodology effectively.
  • Implement initial response actions for individuals and organisations.
  • Coordinate with police and emergency services during an AAO incident.
  • Integrate Prevention, Preparedness, Response, Recovery (PPRR) principles into planning.
Course Modules:
Module 1: Introduction to Active Armed Offender Threats
  • Definition of AAO
  • Why crowded places are high-risk
  • Case studies (e.g., Port Arthur massacre, global examples)
  • National Terrorism Threat Level
Module 2: Characteristics of AAO Incidents
  • Common attack patterns
  • Weapons used (firearms, edged weapons, improvised weapons)
  • Individual reactions: Freeze, Flight, Fight, Film
  • Importance of situational awareness
Module 3: Individual Response – Escape, Hide, Tell
  • Escape: Safe evacuation strategies, cover vs concealment
  • Hide: Lockdown, barricading, staying silent
  • Tell: What information to provide to police (location, offender description, weapons)
  • Practical drills: Evacuation and lockdown exercises
Module 4: Organisational Response
  • Saving and protecting life
  • Evacuation management

Module 5: Prevention and Preparedness
